Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella has discussed the Libyan political crisis and the  threat of Islamic State in Libya with the deputy Foreign Minister of Libya, who is currently in Malta.

During the meeting, Dr Vella and Hasan Al-Sayyir discussed the latest development in Libya, particularly the forthcoming talks to be held in Morocco under the auspices of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, headed by the UN's special Envoy Bernardino Leon.

Minister Vella underlined that there is no alternative to political dialogue and exhorted the Libyan side that it is in their best interest to endorse the political agreement under discussion. Deputy Minister Al-Sayyir agreed with Minister Vella and informed him that Libyans are endeavouring to reach a political settlement to the dispute as this is of the utmost importance for Libya's security and unity.

He continued that peace and security in Libya will combat the threat currently being imposed by DA'ESH - referring to Islamic State by the derogatory Arabic name for the group.

The meeting also focused on issues of common interest between the two countries, particularly the phenomenon of illegal migration and its repercussions on both countries and beyond. Minister Vella informed Deputy Foreign Minister Al-Sayyir that the European Union will assist and support Libya, once a Government of National Unity is in place.

Dr Vella emphasised the fact that Malta, whilst fully appreciating Libya's problems in controlling its extensive borders, demands that the flow of illegal migrants has to be controlled as being discussed at EU level.

Minister Vella and Deputy Minister Al-Sayyir also touched upon technical aspects relating to visa facilitation. Minister Vella pointed out to Deputy Minister Al-Sayyir that all such matters will eventually be resolved once a Government of National Unity is established.

The Deputy Foreign Minister thanked Minister Vella for the continuous support and commitment of Malta and the Maltese Government in the Libyan crisis. He also expressed his appreciation that Malta remains engaged and is always on the forefront to assist Libya in overcoming its challenges.
