The Government of Malta has welcomed the re-establishment of diplomatic ties between the United States and Cuba and the re-opening of Embassies in Washington and Havana after more than half a century.

In a statement, the government said this event marks an important milestone in post-Cold War politics and is the result of the positive attitude and constructive approach adopted by both sides over the past few years. These newly established diplomatic links will surely leave lasting effects and provide the Governments of the United States and Cuba with an important tool in order to further strengthen relations between them and iron out any pending differences through dialogue and direct engagement.

In commenting about this development, Minister for Foreign Affairs George Vella said that Malta is confident that this historic moment will also leave a positive effect on the Caribbean region as a whole, and will serve to bring the people of both countries closer to one another.
