Friday, 3 July 2015, 17:17 Last update: about 10 years ago

After the European Commission said that Malta registered the highest level of confidence in the economy across the European Union, Eurostat statistics show that commerce in Malta is doing well, the government said in a statement.

According to statistics, Malta had the third highest increase in commerce from retail shops during May. In the past six months, an increase has always been registered, compared to the same period last year. In January and March, Malta registered the highest increase of 13%.

Such results show that for the third consecutive month, operators of the retail sector are witnessing the highest rate of optimism in 13 years.  This opposed to what the Opposition is claiming.

Deposits by Maltese families in bank broke the record of €9.5 billion. Two years ago, the figure stood at €7.7 billion.

The government’s decision to reduce tax rate and electricity and fuel tariffs has helped Maltese gain purchasing power.
