‘Alleanza Bidla’ to replace Labour Party as Socialist International member next week

Sunday, 5 July 2015, 09:30 Last update: about 10 years ago

Political party Alleanza Bidla is expected to join the ranks of Socialist International at the international grouping of Socialist parties’ annual meeting being held at the United Nations headquarters in New York tomorrow and Tuesday.

The move comes as Malta’s Labour Party was delisted from the organisation last December after having failed to pay its membership dues. The Labour Party had been a member of Socialist International since 1955, when former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff brought the party into the organisation’s ranks.

The Labour Party was, however, demoted from full member to observer status in 2012 for having failed to pay its membership fees and it was officially delisted in December last year.
