Bus driver fined, has licence suspended after found guilty of negligent driving

Tuesday, 7 July 2015, 16:30 Last update: about 10 years ago

A bus driver today was fined €1,000 and had his licence suspended for three months after he was found guilty of driving negligently and crashing into a parked truck.

Ivan Gauci was also found guilty of injuring three bus passengers as a result of his negligence on 20 August, 2013, at about 6am.

The incident happened in Triq Wied il-Għajn, Zabbar, when the King Long bus crashed into the parked truck.

Mr Gauci testified the accident was not his fault but was the result of the fact that the truck was parked on a bend. He also said that he was not driving fast and the accident happened because it was still dark.

But the magistrate found that his version was not credible. The sun had risen at the time of the collision and, had he been driving at a slow speed, the damage to the truck would have been much less.

Police Inspector Robert Said Sarreo prosecuted.
