Labour MP Etienne Grech stresses need of holistic policy to assist autistic children in schools

Labour MEPs have asked the European Commission and the Council of Europe to adopt a strategic and holistic policy that addresses the challenges faced by individuals suffering from autism. The MEPs stressed that the condition needs to be addressed from a young age.

A few weeks ago, Labour MP Etienne Grech stressed that there is the need to evaluate the current assistance being offered to children suffering from autism, dyslexia and ADHD. He said that the systems launched years ago needs to be updated, allowing such children to be as academically successful as their peers.

Dr Grech said that speaking to a number of parents, he has noticed that the major challenges which are present in the education sector, with the number of LSAs not reaching the demand. The Ministry of Education held a recruitment drive to employ a new number of LSAs.

The parents also suggested multi-sensory rooms in schools and the set up of special schools, which have additional and adequate resources,focuses more on sport activities and the use of technology. Autistic children are known to learn better through the use of visually interactive devices.
