Overall success rate of 28% from 411 IVF procedures in Malta, higher than in UK

Thursday, 30 July 2015, 09:20 Last update: about 10 years ago

In the last 30 months, (January 2013 – June 2015), 411 in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) / intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles have been carried out in Malta, 81 cycles of which have been carried out in the new IVF clinic within Mater Dei Hospital since starting its operations in January 2015, the government said in a statement today.

In total, 116 viable pregnancies have resulted from these cycles – an overall success rate of 28% which compares well to the latest figure published by the UK Human Fertilisation & Embryo Authority (HFEA) – 25% in 2011.

The government is now looking forward to evaluate the current IVF legislation within the context of outcomes of current regulations, new local legislation involving various sectors of the Maltese community as well as recent judgments of the European Court Of Human Rights. An Inter-Ministerial IVF Review Working Committee has been set up and is made up of professionals from the Ministry of Energy and Health, the Ministry for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties and the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government.

As part of this review process, the committee invites all concerned stakeholders and the general public to submit their contributions and suggestions toward this evaluation of the IVF legal framework.

Feedback is to be made either by email on [email protected] or by mail addressed to IVF Legislation Review Working Committee, Ministry for Energy and Health, 15 Palazzo Castellania, Merchants Street, Valletta by not later than 10th August 2015.  Requests for meetings with interested organisations will only be accepted till the 4th August 2015.
