Selfishness

Ivan Grech Mintoff Sunday, 2 August 2015, 10:47 Last update: about 10 years ago

Maltese society is unique. Not uniquely better than other societies, but good and distinctly different. We have our own idiosyncratic morals, a distinct culture and particular set of values that we have inherited from our parents and grandparents that we want to pass on to our children. We are a tolerant and democratic people that believe in democracy, in uncensored newspapers, equality before the law without regard for birth, wealth or ancestry; the universal franchise and regular elections. Historically, our political class and our political system served Malta well.

Our indigenous, social traditions have deep roots and have been in tune with the values and traditions of Malta. Our real progressives have always had a deep concern for the downtrodden. We have always cheered and helped the underdog. At the same time, we have valued the family and the independence of the country. Many seem to believe that national feeling is intrinsically conservative, but plenty of 'nationalists' around the world have been self-conscious left-wingers. The leaders of the 1848 uprisings against the monarchical order across Europe were overwhelmingly men of the left. Even today, plenty of leftist movements define themselves in terms of national resistance against foreign-backed oligarchies.

However, in recent years our political system - in particular the present leadership of the previous socialists party - has been replaced by a new "media driven" elite. Supposedly liberal and supposedly progressives. But look closely and you will see that they are in fact disassembling the all that makes us truly Maltese bit by bit: our economy, our coin, our decision-making, our sense of morality, our traditions and our values.

Malta is being stripped of 'Valuri Maltin' on a daily basis.

The new elite have the ability to turn bad news into great news through media spin. They have no ideological compass, see nothing as self-evidently true, and therefore think nothing of presenting the opposite of yesterday's policy as new and fresh thinking. Their word counts for nothing. They are happy to give voters promises they know they are unable to keep. They are equally happy to do the opposite of what they promised voters in the election campaign and present it as in the interest of the nation.

True liberals would want to limit the authority of the government and strengthen the rule of law. But the liberals in control of our government honour our laws and our democracy more when they are breached than when they are observed. Their perversion of the rule of law is definitely not to Malta's advantage. They seem to use the power to enrich themselves and their friends and benefactors. Their investment and foreign policy decisions seem to be based more on kick-backs than national interest and this is even more true of infrastructure projects (like Mater Dei). True progressives would cheer for the underdog. But, while some struggling just above or just below the poverty line with very little help, others are given high government salaries for jobs that no one has seen them doing. Those that claim to be Progressive Liberals (PL) neither cheer for the underdog nor limit their power over us.

The so called Progressive Liberals do not believe in putting Malta first and foremost.

In the last few months the government has announced it

  • wants to remove our neutrality clause from the Constitution and return us to the statues of someone else's military base.
  • has introduced gay adoption without proper research on the consequences to the children.
  • wants to legalise drug taking and is currently not implementing the law to try and control it.
  • wants to legalise what today is paedophilia by lowering the age of 'consent' to 13 or 15 year of age.

These policies are based on a "culture of death" in which temporary government advantage and the whims of individuals are elevated to the highest good. Our neutrality clause is based on the principle of 'Love your neighbour'. The government sees a temporary advantage in our active participation in someone else's military campaigns and wants to throw away five decades of experience of what is the true long-term national interest.

In the elections, the Progressive Liberals promised not to introduce gay adoptions. Reality proves otherwise and what their word is worth. Did anyone hear them promise to lower the age of consent, making it legal for adults to sleep with kids? No, because they knew this would be unpopular so they kept quiet about this policy during their campaign. No doubt a result of this policy will be an increase of teenage pregnancies. And this will necessitate what they will call a 'much needed and long awaited discussion' on abortion.

Also (the latest and worst so far), during the campaign they did not tell us they would introduce teaching young children that homosexuality in any form is "perfectly normal and acceptable". Who gave them such authority? Who voted for this?

These decisions regarding our kids' sexual education and sexual morals runs contrary to what has always been seen as Valuri Maltin. The decision regarding these issues has been surreptitiously taken away from our families and now is to be controlled by people we would not trust babysit our cats let alone indoctrinate our children.

I have on many occasions denounced these harmful policies. I am a Christian and a Socialist and therefore I believe "Malta l-ewwel u qabel kollox!" must be more than a vote catching slogan to be rolled out when the PL needs funds. To me, it is complete belief, a way of life.

I believe that we have to revert "back to basics". Not because we want to live in some nostalgic past, but because we believe in the reasoning behind solid principles and working for the nation not the individual.

We should see the 'nation' as the caring, protective mother. We should support Maltese society through decent work, decent wages, on which you can raise a family decently. We look after our nation so that it, in turn can look after us all when we need help. I believe these basic principles have served us well and I wish to transmit them to my children. That is my prerogative. My duty.

Let us therefore do away with petty political correctness and talk some real sense to those who seem to live on a completely different planet and who, through totally undemocratic methods, wish to impose their form of warped reality on us.

Clearly, the time is well overdue for decent Maltese folk who are happy with their type of decent society/family morals to reject this new form of imposition and state categorically to the Peppis, Debbies and Gabys that our beliefs, traditions and our families are worth far more to us than any half baked and warped new experiments which makes no sense nor is beneficial to Maltese society.

Whether you like it or not, we utterly reject your policies and are therefore holding on to the basic yet very sound and grounded ideology.

"Malta l-ewwel u qabel kollox" and solid "Valuri Maltin".
