Seventh edition of Malta Short Film Festival launched, films to be uploaded online

The seventh edition of the Malta Short Film Festival was launched today by Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis.

Addressing the launch, the minister said that the festival encourages more people to work within the film industry, which is placing Malta on the cultural tourism map. He said that the goverment has always recognised the importance of the sector, adding that a number of initiatives have been implemented by the Malta Film Commisiioner. In addition, an extensie marketing campaign has been launched around the globe.

He explained that the film industry creates a multiplier effect on the local economy. Apart from the money being paid to the crew, other services such as accomodation and transport are being used.  According to statistics, the industry will have contributed 100 million to the economy. This in comparison to 29 million last year, and 5 million the year before that.

A national policy focused on the film industry is being drafted and a consultation process is ongiong.

Dr Zammit Lewis said that the Malta Short Film Festival serves as a platform for Maltese film-makers to target a global and diversified audience. The films will also be previewed online.

He admitted that Malta still lacks the human resources needed in the industry.
