18th edition of ‘Hands on Heritage’ programme launched

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna (FWA) and Bank of Valletta have launched the 18th edition of the 'Hands on Heritage' programme - a series of interactive history workshops that bring anecdotes from our rich heritage back to life for schoolchildren. This is done through hands-on activities organised at historical sites using replica tools.

Mario Farrugia, chairman of FWA and Joyce Tabone, Manager, Media and Community Relations at Bank of Valletta attended one of the first sessions of this year's programme held at the Saluting Battery at the Upper Barrakka in Floriana.

"We deliver a range of exciting, fun and interesting history workshops that explore such topics as dress, buildings, weapons and how the whole of society was organised," Mr Farrugia explained. "Sessions are held at different sites, depending on the specific period of history being addressed. Here at the Saluting Battery, the programme is based on the defence of Grand Harbour as well as weaponry and lifestyle of the late 1800."

"The programme at Fort Rinella revolves around the late 19th century military life while the Lascaris War Rooms and the Malta at War Museum focus on the military and everyday life respectively," he continued.

Ms Tabone said, "The Hands on Heritage programme is an integral part of the long term collaboration between Bank of Valletta and the FWA. It aims to thrill all visitors, particularly the young ones, with a unique hands-on experience including exposure to and handling of historical artefacts that will not be easily forgotten.

"At Bank of Valletta, we strongly believe that instilling a love for our rich cultural heritage is as important as the conservation of this same heritage for its survival. Thus, heritage constitutes one of the main pillars of the bank's Community Programme."
