A seven-year-old fell to her death from a fifth floor window of the apartment where she lived in Palermo after being punished for stealing chewing gum from a supermarket, Italian media report.

Italian police are investigating whether the child fell out accidentally or whether she voluntarily jumped off, Italian media say.

The girl was taken to the Palermo hospital where she died of her injuries.

She lived with her Italian father and Nigerian mother.
