Updated - Watch: Boat-parachute rope snaps at Ghadira, two land safely near caravan site

Saturday, 8 August 2015, 13:28 Last update: about 10 years ago

A rope linking a speedboat to a parachute snapped in mid-air at Ghadira this morning, with the parachute with two people carried inland by the wind for them to land safely close to the caravan site in the bay.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident happened at the height of the storm that hit the Maltese Islands earlier in the day. The two - a man and woman from Great Britain - were in midair just about to start their supposedly fun-time when the rop snapped.

People on the beach screamed in panic as they realised what had taken place, but the parachute luckily kept dipping towards the shore before landing close to the caravan site on the hill leading up to Cirkewwa.

The two were unhurt, the police told The Malta Independent.

The boat was dragged towards the bay with the force of the wind against the parachute and its bottom stuck in the shallow waters.
