Helena Grech Thursday, 27 August 2015, 13:00 Last update: about 10 years ago

The importance of being environmentally conscious and responsible was the key message in a letter sent to the children of Gozo, by Bishop Mario Grech. Bishop Grech uses stories and real life examples in order to get his message across.

The first point made in his letter related to the perils of being materialistic and the negative impact on the environment when children choose not to reuse old school supplies. This message was conveyed through a story, where the main character, “Francesca” talks about a letter from the Pope that was shown to her during catechism class. The letter from the Pope, called Laudato Si, also related to the environment and the importance of protecting and preserving it.

Bishop Grech continued by inviting everyone to pray together on the 1st of September, for a more environmentally conscious world.

He went on to outline all the different areas where the children could help safeguard the environment. Reducing water wastage and usage was one of the first areas highlighted, due to the water shortages found on the Maltese islands. Bishop Grech continued by urging children to get accustomed to using bicycles and public transport, so as to reduce the amount of cars on the road and thus air pollution and congestion. He also gave a special mention to reducing the time children are spending behind a screen, and urges them to go on more walks in the country side.

A key area that Bishop Grech has brought to the forefront is food wastage; giving a special mention to those children who throw away their packed lunches in order to buy food from school canteens.

He applauded the effort being made by Gozitan schools, through the initiative EkoSkola. He congratulated specifically the children, teachers and Local Councils for encouraging greener schools, separation of waste and overall heightened environmental consciousness.

Bishop Grech urged children to continue their efforts and be an example to adults. He concluded that although the environment is of paramount importance, those striving to be good Christians must also strive to safeguard the environment, as well as show love and respect for each other and those in need. He stated that caring for the environment is not worth much without mutual respect and offering a helping hand to each other. Lastly, it was stated that charity begins at home, and urged children to help their parents, be kind to their friends as well as kind to the environment.
