“The EU migration rules that are currently in place are completely detached from reality,” David Casa, the PN’s Head of Delegation in the European Parliament, said.
Casa pointed out that the chaos and the sheer disorganisation in Europe are creating a very dangerous state of affairs, with asylum seekers being treated inhumanly and with EU Member States' preparedness for this influx found wanting. “A case in point is the uncertainty over the rules related to asylum seekers having to apply for asylum and stay in the member state through which they enter the EU. This rule, known as Dublin II, is inadequate and must be scrapped. Germany has in fact waived the requirement and is indeed allowing migrants to apply for asylum despite having entered the EU through another Member State. This in itself is an admission that this rule is absurd and not working”.
Speaking from the European Parliament in Brussels David Casa MEP stated that “migration is the result of conflicts in the Middle East, North Africa, the Horn of Africa and North Nigeria and as such this crisis deserves a global response, not merely a European one. It is a crisis of unprecedented proportions and solidarity has to be shown by all rich countries of all continents and not just Europeans. Where are the wealthy Arab nations? And where are the countries in the west that preach so much to others about the value of human rights? Nowhere to be seen! It's time for them to stand up and be counted”, stated David Casa
Given the urgency of the situation, this topic will play a big part in the State of the Union speech that is going to be delivered by Commission President Jean Claude Juncker next Wednesday morning in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The EPP Group has asked the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament to hold a separate debate next week solely dedicated to migration and the European Commission is expected to present next week a legislative package on the return of economic migrants and safe countries of origin.
