The police have identified four Romanian men who were involved in the theft of a substantial amount of jewellery items and gold from a shop in Gozo last month.

In a statement, the police said that the thieves entered the shop in Palma Street, Victoria, on 26 August and asked the salesgirl to show them some jewellery that was being exhibited in the shop-window.

She later realised that some jewellery items were missing, and informed the police who started their investigations. CCTV was reviewed and showed the four men taking the jewellery.

The police later identified the four men, who had gone to Gozo on the day before the robbery took place. After committing the crime, they left the island on a boat and, after spending one night in Malta, two of them flew to Italy and the other two to Turkey.

The Malta police has now requested the issuing of an international arrest warrant for these four Romanians to be held and returned to Malta to face court proceedings.
