Thursday, 3 September 2015, 08:14 Last update: about 10 years ago

Anġlu Farrugia, Speaker of the House of Representatives, received a very warm welcome from the Maltese community living in New York when he met them at the Maltese Centre in Astoria, New York.

In his brief address, Speaker Farrugia praised the work carried out by the Maltese community and exhorted them to retain the values they received from their parents during their upbringing and also to strengthen their links with Malta. He also took the opportunity to invite those present to follow the work of the Maltese Parliament as now it is possible to do so since the sittings of both parliament and all committees are streamed live.

This visit materialised on the initiative of Mr Eddie DeBono, Secretary of the Maltese Centre, and took place while Speaker Farrugia was in New York to participate in the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Mr Speaker then presented to the Maltese Centre a copy of the two volumes of the compilation of rulings, "Is-Sedja Titkellem" that Speaker Anġlu Farrugia gave till December 2014, the 9 issues of the Parliament Review and the memento of the Maltese Parliament.

Speaker Farrugia was accompanied by a Parliamentary delegation consisting of Ċensu Galea, Deborah Schembri, David Agius and Deo Debattista as well as by Chris Grima, Malta’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Later the Maltese delegation visited the premises of the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations and thanked the Permanent Representative and the staff for their assistance given to the Maltese Parliamentary delegation during their participation at the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament which is organised once every 5 years.

Speaker Farrugia presented a memento of the Maltese Parliament along with the two volumes of "Is-Sedja Titkellem" to Mr Chris Grima, Malta’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
