‘Where are the women?’ – MPs demand as new Electoral Commission made up of men only

Saturday, 5 September 2015, 07:16 Last update: about 10 years ago

Two Members of Parliament from the two sides of the House of Representatives have made it a point to show their disappointment that no women form part of the newly set up Electoral Commission.

Writing on Facebook, Labour MP Marlene Farrugia and Nationalist MP Paula Mifsud Bonnici wondered why no women were appointed.

Without wanting to cast any doubt on their capabilities, Dr Mifsud Bonnici wrote, “I am so sure that there are some very capable women out there too.”

She was echoed by Dr Farrugia, who asked “Where are the women”.

The Electoral Commission was sworn in on Friday.

The Commissioners are Mario Callus, Noel Cutajar, Paul Sammut, Salvu Sant, Victor Scerri, Joseph Scicluna, Raymond Zammit and Joseph Zammit Maempel. Their appointment is for a period of three years from 30 August, under the Chairmanship of the Chief Electoral Commissioner, Mr Joseph Church.

The commission is largely nominated by the Labour and Nationalist parties. The previous commission was also made up of only men.
