The final phase of the public consultation process tied to a strategic and national plan of action on the green economy was launched today by Environment Minister Leo Brincat at the packaging company Toly in Bulebel.

Addressing journalists, Mr Brincat said that the need for a green economy strategy had long been felt by previous administrations. This will be the first time that such a strategy of this sort would be implemented in Malta.

“If implemented properly, everyone will benefit from a green economy,” he highlighted.

He continued: “As a result of this document – which has been approved by government – another electoral pledge would have been implemented.”

The document, he said, was compiled following a wide public consultation process which included other ministries. Anyone can submit his or her take on the subject until 3 November.

“Any proposal which was put forward and hits a particular sector in some form or other was approved in principle by the sector itself, including the ministers concerned,” Mr Brincat said, adding that the document includes a good 53 initiatives spread over nine sectors.

Mr Brincat said that the last study on the green econmy was done in 2007 after Prof. Edward Scicluna was commissioned by the Employment and Training Corporation to submit the study.

He explained that Toly was chosen for the launch since it showed concrete proof that it engages in environmental-related practices.

Andy Gatesy, the CEO and chairman of Toly, was present for the news conference.

Those wishing to put forward a proposal can do so by sending an e-mail to [email protected]
