President Marie Louise Coleiro launched the UN's HeforShe campaign during Notte Bianca last night in Valletta.

"The campaign promotes a culture of gender equality," she said, highlighting that men will play an active role in the campaign.

The President was chosen by the UN Women to be one of ten Heads of State from around the world to promote the campaign. "The President is the only woman Head of State from the ten chosen around the world".

"We need to recognise that equality is a fundamental right that is still breached at an alarming rate. Regardless of work done, inequality is still strong in today's society and we need to see what we can do to improve the situation," she said.

She said that without real equality, no society can be considered as truly developed. "While we recognise the progress made thus far, we must remain conscious of the amount of work that still needs to be done".

"I will do my utmost so that together - men, women, boys and girls and every member of society - will be equal".

The President's Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, that will lead the campaign, revealed a video message during the announcement, featuring ten Maltese male personalities  who will be promoting the campaign.

The campaign will be spread over a two-year-period.

The campaign will promote a number of messages, including that equality is a fundamental right, that equality is not a question that only affects women, and is in face a question of human rights that affects everyone, and that the campaign is one of solidarity.
