Budget Day today - presentation, features, comments and analysis

Wednesday, 7 October 2015, 15:33 Last update: about 10 years ago

Finance Minister Edward Scicluna will today present the government’s annual budget, which will for the first time take place in the new Parliament building.

Professor Scicluna will make his way to Parliament at 6pm, after attending a media briefing outlining the key measures in the budget.

This will be the second full budget presented by the Labour government, as the PN’s 2013 budget was adopted in its entirety following the March 2013 general election.

The government has held a number of pre-budget consultation meetings with the public titled ‘Delivering our Vision.’

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has emphasised that this year’s budget will not contain any surprises.

He said the budget will continue to build on previous ones and the government will take the opportunity to shore up its finances whilst the economy is enjoying strong growth.

The Nationalist Party has offered its contribution to the budget, as for the first time ever an Opposition Party submitted a pre-budget document.

Explaining the reasoning behind this, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said the PN wants to actively contribute to the budget rather than just criticise it.

The social partners have also pitched in and offered their suggestions, with the government 437 proposals and recommendations from unions and business groups.

The Malta Independent Online will be featuring a live blog of Finance Minister Edward Scicluna's Budget speech, as well as video interviews and reactions from all the key players.

The Malta Independent will be analysing the Budget the following day, with reactions and opinions.

The Malta Business Weekly on Thursday will look at the budget from a business perspective, and provide further analysis and commentary on the budget's aftermath.

A Budget Supplement will be published with The Malta Independent on Sunday on 18 October
