A light-coloured small vehicle was seen leaving Birkirkara after the murder of a lawyer this morning, but the model has not yet been established yet, police said.
Carmel Chircop, a 51 year old lawyer from Birkirkara, was shot dead this morning in his garage. Dr Chircop is a partner of Dingli and Dingli Associates.
Speaking during a crime conference this afternoon at the Police Depot, Assistant Commissioner Silvio Valletta said the lawyer was hit in the chest and back but it still has to be established whether the bullet hit him in the chest first and came out of his back, police said. An autopsy is to be conducted tomorrow to determine further details.
AC Valletta said that the lawyer had filed a report that he was threatened some two years ago and police are looking into it.
A hand gun was probably used in the murder not a shotgun, he said when asked by the Malta Independent.
AC Valletta said the police are not excluding that the murder could be connected to his profession. He said that police are also looking into the fact that there was a pending court case involving the lawyer and a company. It is also working on other leads in relation to some money he may have owed.
CCTV cameras are in operation a short distance away from where the murder took place and the police will be trawling over the footage to see if any other clues can be found. It is understood that there is more than one entrance to the garage where the lawyer was gunned down. People who were in the area when the killing took place are assisting the police in their investigations.
Initially, Police were informed that a number of gunshots were heard. It is understood the lawyer was off to work when he was murdered.
The Police urged the public to come forward and reminded that information can be passed on anonymously.
