Bishop Mario Grech speaks of marriage and society at the Bishops’ Synod

Saturday, 10 October 2015, 16:40 Last update: about 10 years ago

During his intervention during the Bishops' Synod, Gozo Bishop Mario Grech spoke of marriage, the Church and society.

He said that the number of people who are fed up of feeling the weight of marriage are not few in number.

He explained that while there are those who feel betrayed by science, politics and the economy, there are also those who do not have faith in the Church, "as there are those of us who have given more importance to the principle of marriage, rather than the people involved".

He said that this is due to a perception that the Church gives more importance to "the moral norm " (commandments and disciplinary rules ) than on "moral virtue", such as qualities which lead people to essentially be good

The Gozo Bishop said that in today's society, with all the existing problems, the Church should be an instrument of Pastoral mediation between the ideal of marriage, and the "weak man".

He reminded those present that pastoral power is not only there to follow the laws, but also for the good of Christians.
