Gozo: Bridge ruled out, studies on tunnel to commence

Tuesday, 13 October 2015, 08:27 Last update: about 10 years ago

The government has ruled out a bridge linking Malta to Gozo and believes that a tunnel is more economically and environmentally sensible option. Studies will commence soon.

Transport Malta and the Gozo Business Chamber commissioned a study where different scenarios and methods were analysed. They identified that the most economically and financially sound possibility, in the eventuality that the project be constructed, is to construct a sub-seabed tunnel. “This project can also utilise direct private sector involvement”. The next step, the document read, is for the necessary geological studies to be conducted, which should shed light on the technical viability of the possible project. In 2016, government plans to intensify the rhythm in order to arrive at a final decision.

Government moving certain back-office jobs from Malta to Gozo

The government plans to move some back-office jobs from Malta to Gozo. As an example, the police salary division was cited. Government also plans to launch further incentives to create more jobs on the island. Every person offered a contract for three or more years will receive a 20% refund of the average pay, up to a maximum of €5,000.

Airstrip, yacht terminal

Significant progress has been noted on studies regarding the construction of a Gozo airstrip, thus giving an alternative access route to from Malta to the island.

The Gozo cruise liner and yacht terminal project is currently in the negotiation phase and discussions with consortiums who submitted their proposals are underway.

The document also mentions the possibility of a new cruise liner buoy being stationed off Xlendi, replacing the one that currently exists.

Xewkija Industrial Park

The budget notes that the Xewkija industrial park has potential. An EU funds application to construct an SME park has been submitted.

As for students, those from Gozo, studying in Malta, will receive an increase of €800 each year.

Work on the Gozo University campus will occur in 2016, where a new wing will be built to cater for students studying for specialised doctorates, and research work.

Tourism and transport are also on government’s minds.

The Minister mentioned Gozo as a medical hub, and said that new services will begin operations in 2016.

Home for the elderly

The Minister also mentioned the construction of the elderly home, and said that while 2015 saw the initial excavation of the site, it is expected that the construction will begin in 2016. The home is expected to accommodate 70 rooms which can hold 140 elderly persons. “This, aside from the extension for those suffering from dementia”.

Mentioning a Digital Hub in Gozo, the Minister said that the study regarding its technical feasibility and possible financing for its implementation is now complete. Government is now working towards attracting investment in this area. The Minister also mentioned the Creativity Hub in Gozo, and said that the application for EU funds to develop the site, which was formerly occupied by Malta Dairy Products, was submitted last September. He hinted at the film industry as being one such sector to utilise the hub.

The embellishment project at the Citadel is expected to conclude by the end of this year.
