A number of capital projects are planned in 2016 in the sports sector, as well as modernisation projects that will raise existing facilities to an international level.

The National Pool Complex in Tal-Qroqq will be modernised and made more energy and environmentally friendly. New swimming pools will be constructed in Marsascala, Cottonera, Dingli and Pembroke. The Cottonera Sports Complex will also be modernised and the gymnastics hall will be extended. A shallow pool will be added at the Kirkop Sports Complex. Works are also planned at the Marsa Sports Complex. The Horse Racing Track in Marsa will be upgraded to an international level.

New basketball, volleyball and gymnastics academies

The government will also be setting up new basketball, volleyball and gymnastics academies while it is also planning a Judo facility as well as a number of jogging tracks around Malta. It will also keep working on the possibility of developing an international level shooting range.

A White Paper on how sports associations can attract investment towards their facilities will be launched and discussed with the stakeholders.

VAT reductions

From the financial aspect, Professor Scicluna announced that VAT tax on sports activities, including on gym memberships, fitness centres and football nurseries will be reduced from 18% to 7%.

The 7.5% income tax rate currently applicable to football and waterpolo players will be extended to coaches and players in any type of sport.
