More than a week has passed since the Ombudsman sent a report about Ian Borg to the Permanent Commission against Corruption yet Joseph Muscat has not done what everyone is expecting him to do and sack the Parliamentary Secretary, the PN said this afternoon.
“This is nothing but political hypocricy since the Prime Minister is always ready to condemn others and call for their resignation,” the PN said. “But when it comes to him Dr Muscat always does his best to run away, misguide or drag his feet and do nothing.”
The Nationalist Party said the Ombudsman’s report is already a good enough reason for Ian Borg to resign. “The Ombudsman made it clear that the MEPA permit should not have been issued and that Ian Borg obtained it by misleading the authority. The least the Prime Minister should do is to suspend Ian Borg until the Comission against Corruption investigates the case. Dr Muscat is not even capable of doing so much.”
The PN noted that the environmental NGOs had also called for Dr Borg’s resignation while the President of the Chamber of Commerce said that good governance is in a race to the bottom. “These declarations are unprecedented in recent years,” it said.
The PN said it was therefore calling on Dr Muscat to do what was right and remove Ian Borg.
It also called on MEPA Chairman Vince Cassar to see to stop the authority from challenging the Ombudsman and revoke the permit issued to Ian Borg without further ado.
“Our country needs politics to be a sprint to the top, not the bottom. This is why the Opposition presented a document containing more than a hundred proposals aimed at rebuilding people’s trust in politicians,” the PN said.
