‘The law applies to everyone, except Ian Borg’ – Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil

Sunday, 13 December 2015, 13:02 Last update: about 9 years ago

Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil criticised the way Prime Minister Joseph Muscat handled the Ian Borg situation, saying that "the rule of law applies to everyone, except Ian Borg".

He was referring to the recent damning Ombudsman report which found that Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg employed a "devious method" of applying for a development permit for a property in Rabat when the development application listed his father and a project manager as the property's owners instead of Dr Borg himself, who is the actual owner.

The report was revealed by The Malta Independent on Sunday.

"Good leadership requires that when someone investigated on corruption he should be, at the very least, suspended," Dr Busuttil said.

The report states that permission should not have been given, he said. "The report on its own merits his resignation. There's no need to go before another commission, as the ombudsman condemned his actions harshly.  This government was elected on accountability and promises to change the way politics is done in Malta".

The report was sent to the Commission against Corruption, "and at the very least, one expects the Prime Minister to suspend Ian Borg until the case concludes. The Prime Minister didn't even do this".

He said that the Parliamentary Secretary only stopped the progressing works due to media pressure.

He was speaking on a programme on NetTV and also mentioned the PN's good governance document.

"People have described this document as a breath of fresh air," he said.

"This document shows that we not only criticise in parliament, but also come out with our own proposals. This document shows we are drawing a line with our past, where we have made mistakes and could do better, as well as with the filth being allowed by this government".

One proposal in the document, he said, would see the highest appointments in the country require a 2/3rds majority in Parliament. He explained that an information campaign will launch on the PN's proposals.

"Trust in politicians is being lost, and we want to earn back that trust".
