The decision taken by the Commission for the Administration of Justice with regard to the proposed appointment of Ingrid Zammit Young as magistrate is another blow to the government by a constitutional authority, the Nationalist Party said in a statement.
Minister Owen Bonnici breached the Constitution with his nomination of a lawyer who could not be appointed magistrate, the PN said in statement. This is the second condemnation of a constitutional authority in 15 days, the PN said.
The commission’s decision showed that the Justice Minister’s proposal which was supported by the Cabinet of Ministers was irresponsible, illegal and abusive.
It was only thanks to the intervention of the PN that the government was stopped from implementing its decision.
The government should have withdrawn the nomination, and not wait until the lawyer withdrew it herself, the PN said. This showed that the government did not have the political courage to stop its own abuse.
