Last day of Carnival: Sugar coated political satire and more

Tuesday, 9 February 2016, 08:48 Last update: about 9 years ago

The theme chosen by Noel Borg and his two sons Ismael and Carlos for their impressive moving sugar float is based on a number of political controversies that have dominated the news.

From Café Premier we can see entertainer Eileen Montesin coming out wearing an old Malta Labour Party t-shirt but holding the PN flag.

Standing outside Café Premier Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is dressed up as a waiter but underneath his shirt you can see a superman costume.

Another Maltese politician that the Borg patissiers decided to incorporate is Minister for Transport Joe Mizzi, who has said that he knows where to strike oil but has so far failed to keep up the promise. In the float Minister Mizzi is seen splashing around in crude oil.

The on-going saga of public transport has also found its place in this colourful float. The lion represents the De Leon company and has a road map attached to it saying “Right on Time”, which is wishful thinking for all commuters using the service.

At the rear of the float Mr Borg decided to put Nationalist MP Claudette Buttigieg wearing a sexy nurse costume since she is the Shadow Minister for Health. Back to back with Mrs Buttigieg, one finds PN Leader Simon Busuttil looking through a monocle and seeing 36,000 votes – the difference between the two parties in the last election.

Both Dr Busuttil and Mrs Buttigieg are swimming in stormy waters close to an ODZ land. This mechanical handmade sugar float has a metal structure as a base so that the sugar can hold together and the characters can also move.

Mr Borg told The Malta Independent that he and his two sons are already planning what to do for next year’s float.
