Gozo University Group calls for second fibre-optic cable between Malta and Gozo

The Gozo University Group (GUG) has pointed out the need for Gozo to have a second fibre-optic cable between Malta and Gozo for the sake of safeguarding businesses rooted in Gozo. As things stand, the GUG have pointed out the high possibility of there being a "disaster" affecting the only fibre-optic cable between the islands, which will directly affect the productivity of the business itself. This is an obstacle for foreign investment.

GUG states that Gozo is in dire need of a fresh influx of opportunities for the current and future generations. "It's a well known fact that the majority of graduates whom are the heart and future of Malta's sister island look elsewhere for a career not by choice, but it's because it's the only option available." Also adding that it should be of common interest to have each and every possible obstacle that is holding foreign investment back in Gozo to be addressed.

This was the subject of a meeting held with MEP, Dr Alfred Sant, to discuss the possibility of applying for EU funds for the setting up of the crucial second fibre-optic cable. Dr Sant explained that this is highly possible; however it is the government that needs to apply for the funds. GUG appealed for this to be a priority "not swept under the carpet."
