More than 1,600 litres of contraband wine were seized by the Customs Department in a store in the centre of Malta, the department said in a statement. No excise duty had been paid on the wine.

It did not reveal the locality and neither did it say when the operation took place.

The operation also led to another investigation on the importation of 72,000 cans of energy drink on which no excise duty was paid.
