Updated: Metsola receives death threat after speech on migrants in EP; Speaker's, PN's solidarity

Tuesday, 16 February 2016, 07:39 Last update: about 9 years ago

Nationalist MEP Roberta Metsola has received a death threat on Facebook after her speech in the aftermath of the Cologne attacks in the European Parliament last week.

It is not the first time that Roberta Metsola was the target of hate speech because of her views on migration. In 2014, a man had written that he hoped she would be gang-raped by illegal immigrants, later saying that his account had been hacked.

Last Saturday, someone behind a Facebook account called “Save Malta” wrote that Roberta Metsola “needs to be shot”. The comment was written beneath her speech on migration which was uploaded on her Facebook account.

A spokesman for the MEP said that “it is not the first, neither will it be the last” attack on Roberta Metsola, but she is “unaffected” and will continue to bring to the fore migration issues.

In a statement, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Anglu Farrugia, expressed his solidarity with Dr Metsola. The PN did likewise in a separate statement.
