A 45-year-old man from Naxxar has been injured in an accident at the Zejtun fireworks factory.

The man, Saviour Abela, was grievously injured but is not in critical condition.

An ambulance went on site to give first assistance to the man before he was taken to Mater Dei Hospital.

The accident took place when the man was manufacturing fireworks at 9.40am, the police said, in the area known as Lambordi.

The man's father had died in a similar accident that had taken place in the same fireworks factory a few years ago.

John Abela had died, aged 62, following a blast at the factory in May 2010. He was the sacristan at the Zejtun church.

The footage above was taken by a man who was fishing in St Thomas Bay at the time of the accident.
