Pharmaceutical technology project contributes to new processes for improved patient safety

Stephanie Wonnacott, third year student following the University of Malta’s Bachelor of Science with Honours Degree in Pharmaceutical Technology, was awarded the Aurobindo Best B.Sc. (Hons) Pharmaceutical Technology Student Presentation Award at the Annual Pharmacy Symposium.

Ms Wonnacott presented her project entitled ‘Medicine Management Processes on Hospital Wards’. Her project describes innovative medicine management processes in two wards at Mater Dei Hospital. The project which was carried out in collaboration with Mater Dei Hospital Pharmacy presents an effective process aimed at improving the handling, storage and distribution of medicines in the hospital wards. The impact of the study is that it leads to safe medication use for the patients. The participation of pharmaceutical technologists in the development of new pharmacy services at Mater Dei Hospital, for the direct benefit of patients, provides an additional pharmaceutical dimension to the current team at Mater Dei Hospital Pharmacy.

The three-year course leading to a degree in Pharmaceutical Technology is offered by the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Malta and provides graduates with a vast range of job opportunities in different pharmaceutical settings.
