According to a legal notice published by the government this week, motorists running red lights will be fined €250, as opposed to the previously rumoured €100.
Moreover, motorists will be slapped with fines of €100 for the following offences:
· Driving in a priority vehicle lane;
· Driving on the right hand side when not overtaking;
· Driving while holding and/or using a handheld mobile telephone or any other similar hand-held device and;
· Driving a vehicle which has glazing that does not allow visible light transmission
These new laws had been contemplated back in 2010 – in the Various Laws (Criminal Matters) (Amendment) Act, 2010 – but were put in place last Tuesday. The new fines have been applicable from Tuesday, 22 March 2016.
