An innovative concept at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity. One ticket - two shows
With Valletta 2018 looming on the horizon, Malta has lately been enjoying new incentives which are giving life to the creative streak of artists to produce and explore different means of art in diverse media.
Such an innovative concept is being explored by two young Maltese artists who are co-producing Teatr-Ejn. As the name implies, Teatr-Ejn is made up of two original Maltese one-act plays which will be run consequently on the same night for the same audience. Contrary to what theatre-goers are used to, Teatr-Ejn offers its audiences, the chance to watch the same cast of actors interpreting two different characters in two completely different works in one night.
The plays, It-Tfajjel ta' Fuq il-Bandla written by Andre' Mangion and Inverżjoni, written by Stefan Magri are two drama pieces originally written and staged for the Social Theatre Contest organised by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and the Malta Drama Centre.
It-Tfajjel ta' Fuq il-Bandla won the first edition of the festival in 2012. It is the story of a young autistic man that uses his abilities to mitigate the problems and hardships of life. Josette Ciappara, who is directing this piece, is bringing out the authentic reality of autism to the stage.
On the other hand, Inverżjoni presents a very contemporary concept of discrimination against a sexual orientation and challenges the perceived social norm. The play was originally written in 2013 and won the second edition of the Social Theatre contest during that same year. It is a piece which explored the notion of conversion therapy and LGBT-orientated books way before the recent media uproar. Tyrone Grima will be directing this piece adding to the script some very interesting ideas.
The cast is made up of Andre' Mangion, Naomi Said, Mariano Said, Marceline Galea, Clive Piscopo and Marisa Aquilina.
Teatr-Ejn is part of Spazju Kreattiv's programme for 2016. It will run at St James Cavalier on 7, 8, 9 and 10 April.
