The St John Rescue Corps today held its annual review event at their Headquarters and Training School in Fort Madalena. The event was presided over by the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Carmelo Abela.

A memorandum of understanding covering various areas of cooperation  was signed between the St John Rescue Corps and the newly formed St John Ambulance Malaysia Emergency Rescue Unit. St. John Rescue Corps will be providing technical assistance in the development of the Malaysian Emergency Rescue Unit.

A fire engine donated by Merseyside Fire Rescue Services valued at around €250,000 was also inaugurated.

In his address, Minister Abela referred to the signing of the memorandum of understanding and said that this shows that St John Rescue Corps is being seen as a role model overseas.

He added that it is very reassuring for the Maltese public to know that St John Rescue Corps is here to provide a backup rescue service to the Civil Protection Department.

"You have proven your capabilities at times of challenge, and for that, you have our gratitude", said MinisterAbela

Speaking about the dedication of the many volunteers deployed by the corps in frontline operations, he said that the average age of these volunteers is 22 years, showing youthful enthusiasm and involvement in contributing to the community.

He commended the Corps for believing in the importance of self-development through learning experiences, not only locally but also on an international level.

Minister Abela concluded by outlining the Government's work to keep on strengthening the role of volunteers.

Several rescue demonstrations were held by volunteers. Medals and certificates were distributed to outstanding members of the Corps by Minister Abela and the newly appointed Corps Commissioner Andrew Grech.

St John Rescue Corps is a voluntary organisation with around seventy volunteers coming from all walks of life who train regularly and delpoy in frontline operations. Since its inception in 1986, it has trained more than three thousand persons.

Recently, the Corps was  presented with a new rescue boat and water rescue equipment by DLRG Kostanz to assist it in its mission.
