Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has visited the Alza Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, which currently houses some 89,000 displaced people.
The refugee camp is run by the Jordanian government, with the assistance of the UNHCR, Unicef and the World Food Programme.
Dr Muscat was given details about the running of the camp and visited several areas within, including a the school and the hospital.
Speaking to journalists, Dr Muscat said the migration crisis, particularly in Jordan, showed the need for a larger international effort to find a solution to the Syrian crisis.
“The commitment being shown by the government of Jordan, with help from the UNHCR, the WFP and Unicef is impressive,” Dr Muscat said. “The international community, the EU included, needs to keep the migration issue on top of its agenda. Malta will keep helping countries like Jordan and Lebanon, which are doing great efforts to host thousands of refugees.”
