Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi yesterday did not exclude the possibility of running for the vacant post of Labour Party Deputy Leader.

Contacted by this newsroom yesterday, Dr Zrinzo Azzopardi said of a prospective bid for the post vacated by Konrad Mizzi: “One will decide when one will decide.” Pressed to say if he excludes it or not, Dr Zrinzo Azzopardi reiterated the same reply.

The post for deputy leader of the Labour Party became vacant for the second time in a few weeks as Minister Konrad Mizzi resigned. Dr Mizzi was elected as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party on 25 February. He was the only candidate to run for the post.

Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis also seems undecided on whether he should run for this position or not. Replying to questions from journalists yesterday, Dr Zammit Lewis said that he will be taking a decision in the coming days.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo, however, made it very clear in a Facebook post, that he is not interested in taking up the seat as the party’s deputy leader.

Economy Minister Chris Cardona was the first to throw his hat in for the deputy leadership race when on Friday, his former communications coordinator and now consultant Jonathan Attard said that Dr Cardona would be ideal for the job after defending all those who had been unjustly attacked by political adversaries and was the protagonist for the country to reach unprecedented records in investment and employment.

Justice Minister Owen Bonnici has not yet commented on the possibility of him contesting, as sources close to the Labour Party say that he would be one of the favourites to take up the post. This newsroom tried to reach Dr Bonnici for a comment but he was unreachable yesterday.
