Government Parliamentary Whip Godfrey Farrugia told The Malta Independent on Sunday that he expects the no-confidence motion against Minister Konrad Mizzi to be debated next week.

Dr Farrugia confirmed that Speaker of the House of Representatives Anglu Farrugia has called for a meeting of the House Business Committee to discuss the holding of the no-confidence motion debate, which will be held tomorrow at 6.30pm.

Dr Farrugia said: “In the House Business meeting both sides will agree on the sitting’s date and its duration. I envisage that it will be held next week.”

The Nationalist Party, which has already said it will be supporting the motion, has been insisting for Parliament to set a date.

Last Wednesday, Opposition whip David Agius requested the Speaker to set the date for the following day, but Anglu Farrugia refused, saying that the House Business Committee must first be convened to determine Parliament’s agenda.

The motion of no confidence in Konrad Mizzi was filed by Dr Farrugia on the day that Parliament debated a motion of no confidence in the whole government, which the government won 38-31. Dr Mizzi has since been removed from the post of Minister of Health and Energy and instead been reinvented as a minister without portfolio within the Office of the Prime Minister.

The committee will set a date for the motion this evening, which will be a busy night for the House considering that apart from the plenary session and House Business Committee, it will also see two other committees meeting concurrently – the Public Accounts Committee and Social Affairs Committee.
