Independent weather forecasters www.firstmalta.com report that during April 2016 in Malta, less than 4mm of rain fell in total over the Maltese islands spread out over 4 days. Usually during a typical April, Malta would get around 24mm of rainfall, typically spread out over ten days.

The highest rainfall for April ever recorded in Malta was for 1994, when April saw 163.1mm of rainfall, whilst during April 1990 12 rainy days were registered.

Although temperatures start to rise significantly over the Maltese islands during a typical April, daily highs usually reach 20C and lows reach 14C, for April 2016, the average daily high was 21C whilst the lowest was 13C, so the highest was actually hotter than usual and the lowest mean temperature was actually colder than usual.

The highest maximum temperature ever recorded in Malta was 31.7C, registered in 2008.  The website www.firstmalta.com continued by stating that according to their data this temperature was not surpassed during April 2016 as the highest recorded temperature during last month was on the 13th April (2016) when the temperature reached a maximum of 29C and a low of 19C.

The data presented here is according to an aggregate of open source weather station data, which may be slightly different to what other weather channels or meteorological office data is due to location, however it should be pretty close.

This drier and hotter than usual weather could be due to a strong El Niño effect registered throughout the world.
