An Ethiopian man this morning was arraigned in court on charges of human trafficking.
Hadush Abayu Kidanu, 58, had fled the Maltese islands nine years ago as he awaited trial by jury. He was arrested in Switzerland last November and was later extradited to Malta.
Inspector Mario Haber charged the accused with breaching bail and travelling without a passport.
Inspector Haber added that the accused had cooperated with the police and had admitted to travelling without a valid passport early on.
The accused admitted to breaching bail and Magistrate Charmaine Galea ordered the confiscation of his Lm5,000 (€11,647) personal guarantee. The court revoked his bail and ordered his re-arrest so that he could stand trial as originally set. He was sentenced to one month imprisonment for breaching his bail conditions.
Legal aid lawyer Francine Abela appeared for the accused.
