Forty-eight hours into an online poll on this news portal, interesting patterns are emerging on the race for the Labour Party deputy leadership post.
From the outset, it must be said that this is not a scientific poll, but nonetheless it serves to gauge what people are thinking.
And, while Chris Cardona, who has already announced his interest in the post and so far is the only one to do so, has gathered a good percentage of preferences, Evarist Bartolo, who has declared he has no intention to contest, has also garnered a sizeable amount of votes.
As at 8.30am Friday, Cardona has picked up 26.57% of the votes, with Bartolo following closely behind on 23.10%.
The Malta Independent chose other Labour MPs and officials who would attract interest among the PL delegates, although they will not necessarily contest.
MEP Miriam Dalli, for example, seem to generate a considerable amount of support with 16.42% of the preference made so far, and is in third place. Toni Abela, who was unceremoniously dumped out of the position to make way for Konrad Mizzi – only for the latter to resign just two months later following the Panama Papers scandal – would be the preferred choice of 10.41% of the people who expressed their views on this poll.
Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, who has not denied his interest, is in fifth place, while PL executive secretary Lydia Abela has picked up more preferences that two other ministers who are being linked with the position – Edward Zammit Lewis and Owen Bonnici.
