‘Prime Minister has been caught lying by the ICIJ’ – Tonio Fenech posts on Facebook

Tuesday, 10 May 2016, 09:22 Last update: about 9 years ago

"Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has been caught lying by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, who are publishing the Panama papers on all those who could have had some form of involvement," PN MP Tonio Fenech said today in a Facebook post

He said that when searching for Tonio Fenech, you cannot find the name anywhere, not in Panama, not in the British Virgin Islands and not in Jersey, "nowhere" he said, "as I never had and don't have a company there".

"This is proof Joseph Muscat lied".

"Use the same link" he said," and type in Konrad Mizzi, and after try Keith Schembri, and one will find that which they are not supposed to have, secret companies in Panama".

"They have no shame when it comes to slinging others with their own mud".

Mr Fenech was recently in headlines after it was said that he had various connections with offshore companies, such as being a director of a company whose parent company is registered in the British Virgin Isles - a tax haven.

He previously said: "As an MP who is not part of the Executive, I have every right to work in my profession [financial services], like every other MP also does. My profession is in the area of financial services. The professional services I offer to a number of companies is to be an independent member on the Board of Directors of any company seeking the services. This is a service offered by our country as a financial services hub".

"It is a lie to say that in my declaration of assets, I wrote down a list of companies without writing what they are. I filled out my declaration of assets in accordance with the Parliamentary criteria - inclusive of all the details required, as laid out by the Code of Ethics of MPs. Any information about my professional activities was revealed by my declaration of assets, because I have nothing to hide".

"The companies mentioned are registered in Malta, and I became a director after my role as a Government Minister ended, in 2013. This is contrary to the scandal of Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi who opened up personal companies in Panama a short time after they came into power, with the companies being opened just five days after the last general election".

Lawyer Reuben Balzan, former President of the Chamber of Advocates, took to Facebook after his links to a company in Panama Papers were revealed. It was reported that FZD Trustee & Fiduciary Services Limited which is now known as Valletta Trustees. The firm served as the intermediary for a company in the British Virgin Islands called International Goods and Services Limited of Roquebrune, France.  Reports read that one of the shareholders of Valletta Trustees is Reuben Balzan.

Dr Balzan spoke of the damage to the Financial services sector on Facebook, after posts referencing him were made by the Prime Minister's Communication's Head Kurt Farrugia, and Glenn Beddingfield, a person of trust employed by the Prime Minister.

Dr Balzan said: "A government minister and the PM's chief of staff get caught owning hidden companies in Panama. Not only are they unable to provide legitimate reasons why they set them up, but documentation shows that one of the reasons they gave is for the receipt of commissions. Not only do these gentlemen not feel they should resign but they insist that they have done nothing wrong".

"In the meantime, local service providers have to pay hefty licence fees to the MFSA, and also have to submit themselves to training, strict regulation and compliance by both MFSA and FIAU to ensure that they abide by the law. This on an annual basis of course. Anyone who has had the pleasure of an MFSA or an FIAU compliance visit knows exactly what I'm talking about. These service providers promote Malta as a reputable financial services jurisdiction and when successful, set up structures which pay tax in Malta".

"Incredibly, government officials, employed within the Office of the PM himself, distract public attention by publicly attacking the same service providers who are licensed by the same government to provide a legitimate service and who have to carry the substantial annual regulation costs to operate in accordance with the law".
