EU Nations Waterpolo Cup: Malta keeps up the good work

Saturday, 14 May 2016, 07:19 Last update: about 9 years ago

Malta     21     Denmark     8

(4-4)(5-2)(5-2)(7-0)

The locals followed up on their two previous victories with another high scoring encounter, as they swept aside the Danish obstacle. Denmark had lost by the odd goal against Switzerland, earlier on in the day, but they were no match for Malta, even if the Maltese players took time to get going. In fact they trailed for most of the time in the opening session, but from then onwards they could dictate the play, and they eased away from their opponents, to register another good victory. Now only Switzerland stand in their path to a place in the final, when the winners of teh two groups play against each other. This time around the locals made very good use of their man ups, converting six from seven.

After a Jordan Camilleri opener, Malta had to chase their adversaries, who overturned the score, after Matthew Zammit shot out from a penalty throw. The same Zammit, Jerome Gabarretta and Jordan Camilleri drew level for Malta on three occasions. In the second period the maltese started their merry way, as Camilleri scored twice more, from as many man ups, in between Matthew Zammit also found the net and Gabarretta also netted from an extra man in the water. Denmark then managed a couple of strikes, with Matthew Zammit scoring in between, for a 9-6 advantage for the locals, at the interval.

After the break a Camilleri penalty throw and a Dino Zammit strike increased Malta's advantage. Matthew Zammit scored on either side of two Denmark goals, with Peter Borg and Michael Rizzo completing the scoring in this session, for a better 14-8 lead for Malta. As in the game before, against Scotland, Ryan Coleiro took his place in goal, vice Nicky Grixti, and he managed to keep a clean sheet, as the Maltese carried all before them, scoring seven times without any reply from the Danes. Gabarretta, with his third goal, Matthew Zammit and Camilleri hit the mark, as Camilleri scored his double hat trick. Ben Plumpton and Matthew Zammit's sixth goal added on to Malta's score, with the Danes failing their last two man ups. The locals' last two goals came from Aurelien Cousin and a second by Dino Zammit, for a more pronounced victory, their third in a row. They will now meet Switzerland, with the Swiss having to play another game in the morning programme, against Poland.
