Archbishop Charles Scicluna described the Phoenix vessel, by which hundreds of migrants have been saved while attempting to cross the Mediterranean for a better life, as 'the ship of mercy.'

The Archbishop was addressing journalists while visiting the boat in Marsa marking the occasion of World Social Communication Day. The theme which was chosen by Pope Francis for these years is 'Communication and Mercy'.

"I am here commemorating the visit by Pope Francis in the island of Lesbos and to pass on his message that communication is the essence of mercy," he said.

While speaking to volunteers who help MOAS (Migrant Offshore Aid Station) in their mission to save migrants' lives at sea, the Archbishop explained that Malta comes from a tradition of compassion. "A tradition which was introduced to us also by the beloved Saint Paul."

He said Malta needs to be a protagonist in world mercy and called on journalists to keep on serving their mission to raise conscience by communicating humane stories.

"As Pope Francis said, we need a Europe of hope, one which builds bridges not walls." He thanked those who work on this ship, "this is the first step in the life of dignity for those migrants seeking refuge."

"Journalists have an important role in educating the public to accept and tolerate. To accept it to take a risk, and this only comes with love. Those who seek refuge in Malta might not have the means to buy a passport, but we still welcome them in our homeland."
