The tenth team of the Kilimanjaro Challenge Malta is gearing up to take on the highest free-standing mountain in the world, all for a good cause.
Over the past ten years, over a 100 members have taken on this challenge, while collecting over €590,000 in funds for projects in Africa, which are managed by Moviment Missjunarju Gesu’ fil-Proxxmu.
This year, funds will be collected for a Kindergarten project in Jemu, Ethopia. Families in this area live in extreme poverty, deprived of many services. Among the various needs, there is dire need for a day care centre, to provide some opportunity for children who have very little prospects otherwise.
The school will be able to host an average of 120 children aged between 4 and 7, who will be taught basic education and provided with at least one meal per day, preventing hunger and diseases related to malnutrition. There will be no discrimination between children of different gender, religion or tribes. A minimum of €55,000 needs to be collected for this project to be completed. The Group is also aiming to raise another €10,000 for a flour mill to be built close to the school.
This year, the project will be named after Chris Criminale – a member of Kilimanjaro Challenge 8, who sadly passed on late last year.
Past projects by Kilimanjaro Challenge Malta included the construction of three kindergartens, a 3-in one project, a clinic and a house for persons with disabilities. The projects were carried out in Ethopia and Kenya.
Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain on earth, standing at 5895m. The challenge will take 8 days, with team members battling temperate which vary from extreme heat at the foot of the mountain to extreme cold at the summit. The worldwide success rate currently stands at 45%, but thanks to intense training and preparation the success rate for the Maltese team is staggeringly high.
The Group is planning to leave Malta in January 2017.
