Marlene Farrugia calls for protection of niche tourism; Godfrey Farrugia echoes environmental stance

Independent MP Marlene Farrugia has called for the Malta Tourism Authority to be a leader in terms of protecting tourism and promoting real Maltese culture to tourists, as well as appealing for environmental protection. At the end of her appeal to protect certain tourism niches, all present members rose to give a round of applause to welcome PL Deputy Leader Louis Grech back to Parliament after having undergone surgery.

Government Whip, Godfrey Farrugia, also took on a heavily environmental stance in his adjournment speech saying that built development should never be to the detriment of environmental sustainability.

Dr Marlene Farrugia's appeal was for tourists to be able to experience what it really feels to be Maltese. Aspects of culture which Dr Farrugia listed include narrow village streets, home cooked food and the real festive traditions we have.

The Independent MP also took on a more environmental stance pointing out the necessity to maintain the little natural environment we still have. We need to find a balance between modern development and initiatives, as well as what Malta is naturally known for.

Keeping the tourism sector growing doesn't only depend on the MTA however, said Dr Farrugia, appealing to the general public to also do their part.

During his adjournment speech, Dr Godfrey Farrugia also spoke about environmental conservation. He mentioned a number of isolated cases of environmental degradation, such as Wied Qirda which could be avoided with just a little respect.

Dr Farrugia also took on the initiative of showing a number of pictures showing incorrect practices in terms of waste disposal, heavily condemning the general public and even certain companies who are directly contributing to destroying the environment. The pictures were then tabled in Parliament.

In conclusion Dr Farrugia said that he was positive, but contrary to his usual style, he "passed judgement on what we as a people are responsible for." Our 'rock culture' is leading us to a level of development which is anything but sustainable.
