Association of Speech-Language Pathologists talk this Wednesday

Sunday, 5 June 2016, 09:53 Last update: about 9 years ago

The Association of Speech-Language Pathologists is once again holding a very interesting talk by Andy Yates, PECS consultant, from Pyramid Educational Consultants UK. The talk, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS): An Overview for Increasing Communication Skills and Reducing Challenging Behaviour, will explore the importance of embedding communication skills throughout the day as well as how to start planning for the possible transition from PECS to using a Speech Generated Device (SGD). The target audience is professionals (such as teachers, occupational therapists and LSAs) working with children with limited communication skills as well as parents whose children have such difficulties.

Research shows that PECS is not only an alternative means of communication, but also stimulates language development as children learn the importance of communication intent. The system is easy to take on board but one would need the support and expertise of a Speech-Language Pathologist who will guide the parents and the system user along the way.

The talk will take place at the Malta Federation of Professional Associations premises in Sliema Road, Gzira, on Wednesday, 8 June at 7pm. Those interested in attending this talk are encouraged to book a place by emailing [email protected] or by calling 7942 7660.

Mr Andy Yates will be also delivering a detailed training course on PECS on 9 and 10 June. This course is for Speech-Language Pathologists and other professionals. Very few places are left. ASLP encourages those interested to send an email to [email protected] or visit www.aslpmalta.org or our Facebook page for more information.
