Police investigating threat against Alleanza Bidla leader

Sunday, 19 June 2016, 11:30 Last update: about 9 years ago

The police are investigating a threat levelled against Alleanza Bidla leader Ivan Grech Mintoff in a Facebook message. In the message, an individual criticised Mr Grech Mintoff for speaking against the government and the Labour Party, and threatened that he would be killed soon if he wasn’t careful.

Contacted yesterday, Mr Grech Mintoff said that he had filed a police report and that threat was being investigated.

He added, “Alleanza Bidla strongly condemns the written threat that its leader Ivan Grech Mintoff received on Friday night during the Exodus political programme which he hosts.

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental right and we are committed to keep on bringing up issues that are important to the Maltese society. No such threat will prevent us from standing up and championing Maltese values, culture and identity. At the same time, however, we urge the government to guarantee the safety of our members, and the traditional parties should unequivocally join us in condemning such unacceptable behaviour.”
