Cabinet, PN parliamentary group convened after Britain votes to leave European Union

The Cabinet of Ministers has been convened by the Prime Minister and the Nationalist Party parliamentary group has been summoned by Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil in the wake of the British vote in favour of leaving the European Union.

PM Muscat has scheduled the meeting before the vote but, with Malta set to take over the presidency of the European Council in January, Britain’s choice to leave the EU will throw more pressure on Malta’s role.

Both the Labour Party and the Nationalist Party had expressed their views in favour of Britain staying in the EU.

In comments to TVM this morning, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said Malta is prepared for the UK's exit from the EU.

"It's not what we had hoped would happen, but it has happened," the Prime Minister said.

"We have plans in place, we had commissioned specialised studies in various sectors projecting such an eventuality. We stand to lose if - or rather, when - the UK leaves the EU. But there are things we can benefit from," the Prime Minister said.
